Deborah A. Smillie
Associate | Los Angeles
Deborah Smillie is an associate attorney in the Firm’s Los Angeles office. Deborah began her career representing cable television companies in antitrust and First Amendment cases. Deborah also served as trial counsel in the coordinated asbestos coverage action in the San Francisco Superior Court before the late Honorable Ira A. Brown, Jr., where, upon her cross-examination, the defendant Assistant Insurance Manager admitted that he used asbestos-related terms interchangeably, paving the way for a rare insurer victory on the issue of ambiguity in a contract.
In 1992, Deborah established the Wrongful Termination Department in the Long Beach branch office of a local law firm.
Deborah has prevailed on a number of writ petitions and appeals, including an appeal from a judgment of nonsuit, where the Second Appellate District held that a state regulation may establish the standard of care in a medical malpractice case, without the necessity of expert testimony.
Deborah’s current practice includes products liability, premises liability, professional malpractice, employment law, insurance coverage and bad faith litigation, appellate law, construction defect, business litigation, and a wide variety of general civil liability matters. Deborah is a member of the Firm’s Employment Practices Group and Appellate Practice Group.
Deborah has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Los Angeles, where she graduated magna cum laude, and a Juris Doctor degree from Hastings College of Law, where she served as Articles Editor for the Hastings Communications and Entertainment Law Journal.
Deborah is admitted to practice before all California Courts, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and several United States District Courts.
In her spare time, Deborah enjoys spending time with her miniature dachshund (Obi Wan Kenobi), attending the Civic Light Opera, visiting the beach, and rooting for her beloved Los Angeles Dodgers.
